WS | Reuse of militar barracks and militar areas

Professors

Luca Monica, Marco Canesi

Location

Milan, Italy

The project is the opportunity of requalification and redestination of 5 militar barracks in Milan, placed in the middle of the urban contest near to infrastructural connections, in “district” of sociality addressed to the most weak classes of people: immigrants, families in difficulty, elderly and prisoners recovering their penalty. Besides it’s located a strategic Coordination Centre for the environment and administration. The study moves from two preliminary assumptions, both developed by professor Marco Canesi: the infrastructural plan of Milan as “Città Lombardia“ and the economic proposal of an alternative market for the environmental able to solve monetary and social Italian crisis.

The system of the five militar areas is different from the multiform geography of other disused areas through its shape and typological unicity, corresponding to the militar quartering function. The functional paradigm of “Asylum” city, refuge for weaker classes, can be more effective if rearticulated in homogeneous building typologies. The unicity of the functional proposal can find its mayor typological adaptability to the ospitability of them. The actual existing residential buildings fix well to the temporary residential function and to public services, while new buildings for public life will complete the enclosure walls, exclusive limits time ago, in a circuit of protection of a new urbanity.
