From the Great Wall to Pink Floyd, the wall has always been present in the history of humankind acquiring a symbolic meaning broader than any other architectural element. The wall is an element of division. It marks a boundary and defines a space. It is expression of the human mind itself. The wall is an element of break, an impassable limit or a community perimeter. It has influenced painting, science and literature suggesting and encouraging a cultural production of unequaled fascination and importance. The walls, again, marked and still mark extremely painful moments of the international political scenario from Berlin to Mexico. For the competition all designers were invited to design a series of installations in the city of Bologna.

STAGE

“It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances. The true mistery of the world is the visible, not the invisible” (Oscar Wilde)

Wall is here conceived as filter and social screen, a crucial word in the multidisciplinary field of representation and communication. Thus potent metaphor for images, devices through which we interact and communicate within a visually mediated society. The ephimeral world of appearances is not a minor form of reality but it constitutes the perceivable arrangement of society where images of what people have about each others play as in a social aesthetic show. Everyone communicates by appearances.

BACKSTAGE

“To be is to be perceived” (George Berkley)

Wall is here conceived as filter and social screen, a crucial word in the multidisciplinary field of representation and communication. Thus potent metaphor for images, devices through which we interact and communicate within a visually mediated society. The ephimeral world of appearances is not a minor form of reality but it constitutes the perceivable arrangement of society where images of what people have about each others play as in a social aesthetic show. Everyone communicates by appearances. They represent what we are in the public space. Reality doesn’t exist outside perception of it. Images, pathological forms of relationship in the social connective field, are the foundation of what we know about others and of what others know about us. They are the unavoidable medium of communication and the substance of the shared world. Images lives in the others, not inside us. We are all actors. We all act and perform characters since there is a substantial part of staginess in everyone.
